A disappointing Town fell to a 1-0 defeat at Crewe's Gresty Road, a second half Kenny Lunt freekick the difference between the sides. The Blues never got going in the first half however they improved after the break but couldn't turn their possession into goals.

A profligate Town made very heavy weather of beating Kidderminster Harriers in the Carling Cup, eventually running out 1-0 winners in extra-time. Dean Bowditch scored the goal 10 seconds into the additional half hour after chances galore had gone begging during normal time.

An injury time Tommy Miller penalty saved Town's blushes as they rarely looked at their best against Reading in the opening game of the season at a sweltering Portman Road. The visitors had gone ahead through Steven Sidwell in a game of few chances at either end.

Town manager Joe Royle has named his squad for Friday's home pre-season friendly with Levski Sofia (KO 7.45pm). Chris Makin is the only injury worry but he is expected to be OK to start at the left of defence.

Town continued their good start to their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win against Swedish side Mjällby at their picturesque Stradvallen ground in Hällevik. Marcus Bent, Darren Bent and Pablo Couñago got the goals, all in the first half with the home team notching a consolation late in the second.

Town manager Joe Royle has called on midfielder Jermaine Wright to show the form he is capable of during 2002/03. Wright, named Town's most improved player two years ago, had a disappointing time last season and by the end was booed by some sections of the crowd.

Blues' boss Joe Royle says that Town could not turn down Portsmouth's £750,000 offer for Matt Holland. Royle cites the continuing reduction in transfer fees across the board and the club's need to fulfil commitments made in the Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) agreed with creditors last month as the major factors behind the decision to accept the bid.
